roof top rescues, homes under water. boats and helicopters trying to help families leave and pets being saved. isaac is now a tropical storm but still pounding the region with heavy rain. good evening. i'm dan ashley. 1500 people evacuated west of new orleans because of rising flood water from tropical storm isaac. the big storm is creeping along and piling up water with intense downpours. this house like many could not take all that water as you can see. officials say one levy will have to be punctured to relieve the pressure against it. dozens of people in louisiana and in coastal, mississippi have been rescued. more on that from abc 7 news reporter bill weir. >> reporter: the 7th anniversary of katrina, another are day of roof top rescues. while the new $14 billion federal levy system held tight isaac proved too much for the old earthen levies in the rural suburbs south of town and dozens of families woke up with

the realization that their homes were drowning fast. >> we had to break through the ceiling and come through the attic and they took us out of the attic into the boat. so bad down there. so bad. >> i lived there for 53 years and this is my first time seeing something like this! this ain't never ever happened to us. this is insane. >> some were rescued by game wardens. others relying on the kindness of stranges like jesse shafer the third and fourth. the father son samaritans jumped into their fishing boats in the predawn dark and went hunting for the helpless. saved around 60 people and dozens of pets. >> they were caught in the attic. it is hard to know what they were in there or not if they couldn't hack their way out. >> we never seen anything like this. not even cattrano.

me but there is no chance of seeing it. and this needle like rain and pounding winds is that van with us all day. also inland major flooding going on. hundreds of roads closed just in the state of mississippi. people under water. homes, some schools reporting flooding. and if that wasn't enough. a third are threat. tornado warnings, a swarm around us all day. >> ginger zee reporting. let's get the latest on isaac from spencer christian. now, tropical storm but still quite dangerous. >> the seasonster a little to the west northwest of new orleans. you you can see how massive and widespread the effects of the storm are. we still have tornado watches by the way in effect in this box in this area of a large part of mississippi and eastern louisiana as ginger zee just mentioned there because the bands around the center of the storm do spawn tornadoes. here is the track it is on at the moment. maximum sustained winds 60 miles per hour.

tropical storm isaac now. no longer a hurricane. moving towards the northwest at 6 miles per hour. moving very slowly, thus dumping heavy rain on all area affected by the storm. it is expected to take a track up into western arkansas the next couple of days brushing the eastern edge of oklahoma and curling back northeastward through missouri and oh over towards illinois. going maintain the structure for several days and will be a major rain producer and possibly a flooding storm the next four days through sunday evening. dan? >> all right, spencer. a big storm in terms of size. >> it was is a massive storm. now, burglary suspects trying to get away from police. they managed to make it 40 miles before officers arrested two of them as sky 7 hd hovered above. they were caught after a chase on is several east bay freeways at speeds more than 100 miles per hour. it started on 780 near the glen cove area of vallejo and continued on to 680 throughual

net creek on to highway 24 and through the tunnel and then to highway 13 in oakland where the driver tried to make a u-turn and crashed. as abc 7 news reporter nick smith explains, police are still tonight looking for one person who was in the car. >> reporter: sky 7 hd was overhead when a police chase that started in vallejo ended with the driver of the suv crashing his vehicle at a north oakland exit ramp. >> suspects jumped out and ran down the hillside. police gave chase on foot. a perimeter was nut place and within minute two suspects caught the and cuffed and taken into custody. a search continues for the third. officials with the oakland unified school district tell us the elementary school was on lockdown as a precaution but the order was brief and administrators told us "everything was fine." police requested help from chp when the driver ignored an

officer about's request to stop and instead took off. police tell abc 7 news that the men involved are burglary suspects. not only did they want to elude capture they tried the best to get rid of stolen goods as a police helicopter followed them. >> a lot of the property theyed they were throwing out of the vehicle as the pursuit was occurring. >> most of the tossed items recovered along the freeway. all will be used to help police build this case and look for a possible connection to others. >> next as we try and gather the evidence and take in the two suspects we have in custody. >> police have not been able to locate the third suspect a black male in his 20s. low cropped hair and clean shaven. he may have one affected by poison oak. any one with information is asked to call vallejo police department. in oakland, nick smith, abc 7 news. in marin county a crash sent the driver of a scooter over a busy freeway to the road

below. a portion of downtown second street closed because that is where the scooter landed, hitting a stopped car. no word on the condition of the rider with you it appears the accident happened after the scooter hit the freeway median. a dog riding in a pouch was found dead. people in the flooded visitation valley neighborhood of san francisco were allowed back in their homes for the first time in more than 24 hours. cleanup continues around the huge sinkhole caused by a broken water pipe. power are and water were restored and residents returned to their houses over a make shift bridge. crews worked to reduce the size of the hole by making a plywood wall inside. >> temporary backfill around the much smaller footprint to restore much of the intersection and greatly reduce the public hazard here. >> crews dug out the broken piece of the 42-inch water are pipe this afternoon. investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of the

rupture. in san jose, firefighters made the difficult decision to let a huge plant nursery burn to the ground this morning. that is because firefighters were concerned about pesticides and fertilizer that could be sped around by the water. terry mcsweeney has the story. >> reporter: when firefighters arrived about midnight the 50-year-old summer are winds nursery was engulfed in flames. the pictures from san jose firefighter karl rose show what firefighters were up against. >> it was determined at the time that the priority was to let it burn off and that would create less of a hazard than dumps thousands and douse thousands and thousands of gallons of water on it. >> the water that was used in spots but prehe vented from entering the storm gutters was tested to see if the plan worked. >> most of the products here are organic. only a few that are are concerned and those testing as i said was well, well below anything hazardous. >> the regional manager for the summer winds nursery chain

at the republican national convention paul ryan accepted the party nomination for vice president and then turned to praise and ridicule. >> after four years of getting the run around america needs a turn around and the man for the job is governor mitt romney. president obama was asked not long ago to reflect on any mistakes he might have made. he said well, i haven't communicated enough. he said his job is to "tell a story to the american people" as if that is the whole problem here?

in los angeles tonight, 11 people hurt, 9 children when a

car plowed into them near a school. witnesses pulled victims from underneath it. it happened near the l.a. coliseum. the driver is more than 100 years old. four of the injured children are in serious condition. and an accident at 8th and market streets in northern california tied up lunch hour traffic in san francisco south of market. it happened just before 11:00 when a pickup truck and a jeep cherokee collided. the cause of the accident is under investigation. a major northern california wildfire that threatened thousands of homes and led to a massive evacuation is about now to be fully contained. cal fire says firefighters should have the ponderosa fire contained this evening. they are mopping up some of the remaining hot spots. the fire outside of redding consumed 43 square miles and destroyed at least 140 structures in the two weeks since it started.

excerpts from a book written about the attack that killed osama bin laden released tonight. they paint a different and controversial version of the events during and after that raid. here is abc's brian ross. >> reporter: the first details provided by the white house and mill tare arery to abc news and others describe the scene in which bin laden was confronted in his bedroom, his youngest life by his side. making a move interpreted as rehe siftance and shot in the chest and above the left eye. >> and, indeed, he did resist. >> that is not true according to the new book. he says bin laden was shot in the side of the head as he peered out his bedroom door. according to box ex-pearls owen writes that the seals found bin laden twitching and convulsing after he was shot. we trained out-of-bounds lasers on his chest and fired is several rounds, slamming his
